PBCN COMMUNITY SAFETY OFFICER PROGRAM
Role and Responsibilities
The Community Safety Officer Program will provide the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation the option to enhance existing community safety services through the employment of Community Safety Officers. Community Safety Officers will deliver high priority / low risk to harm community services and provide the community with additional uniformed presence.
Community Safety Officers will address community safety concerns and support the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Community Safety Officers would enable police officers to remain focused on more complex community safety and serious criminal enforcement activities.
- Provide a uniformed presence in the community to enhance community safety
- Enforce Provincial Statues, Bylaws, and pertinent Band Council Resolutions
- Attend designated Criminal Code offences for the purpose of receiving information, evaluating, and liaising with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
- May hold additional authorities based on the needs of the community, which will require approval from the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety (Search & Rescue, crime and emergency security, service of legal documents)
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Community Safety Officer appointments are issued under the signature of the Minister as authorized under the Police Act.
Applicant Requirements:
- Minimum age of 18 years old.
- Proof of Grade 12 or equivalent - Transcript required.
- Class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license (must not be Novice 1 or Novice 2) with Drivers Abstract.
- No criminal record and completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check, be free from criminal involvement in three preceding years. Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check will only be recognized as valid within 30 days of completion.
- No outstanding criminal charges and not subject of a criminal investigation.
- Successful completion of the physical abilities evaluation test (SOPAT – Sheriff Officer’s Physical Abilities Test). Completed during the Community Safety Officer Induction Course.
- Successful completion of the required provincial Community Safety Officer Induction Course.
- Prior training and job-related experience may meet or exceed the learning objectives of the Community Safety Officer Induction course. In these cases, exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be approved in writing by the Assistant Deputy Minister.
Community Safety Officer Induction Training
The Community Safety Officer Induction Course is the minimum training requirement for issuance of a Special Constable appointment for Community Safety Officers.
The Community Safety Officer Induction Course is a eight-week course at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Prince Albert Campus. Next course is tentatively scheduled for the August 25, 2025.
Upon successful completion of the course and SOPAT, Candidates will receive a statement of achievement from Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Special Constable appointment would be at the discretion of the Ministry, under the Police Act.
