WMP Recreation Program Manager
Position Summary:
The Recreation Program Manager plays a key leadership role within the WitatoskTmihtotan Mitho-Pimatisiwin
(WMP) Wellness Plan, supporting the physical, emotional, and cultural well-be'ing of PBCN members through organized recreation. Aligned with the community-led vision of the WMP program, the Recreation Manager will coordinate the implementation of inclusive, culturally grounded, and prevention-focused recreation programming across all eight Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) communities.
This role strengthens our long-term goal of building a vibrant, connected Nation through activities that foster wellness, leadership, safety, and pride in Woodland Cree identity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Nation-Wide Recreation Implementation
Develop and manage inter-community leagues (e.g., hockey, volleyball, softball), seasonal games (PBCN Winter/Summer Games), and traditional recreation events. - Support Community-Led Delivery
Work with Community Recreation Workers and Advisory Committees to tailor recreation programs that align with each community's Comprehensive Community Wellness Plan (CCWP). - Coordinate with Education and Wellness Sectors
Liaise with PBCN Education Authority and Wellness Coordinators to align recreation efforts with broader prevention and school-based wellness strategies. - Ensure Accountability and Evaluation
Implement standardized reporting tools (sign-in sheets, event logs, photos), and contribute to quarterly evaluations and Nation-wide progress reports. - Capacity Building and Training
Provide leadership training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for recreation staff across PBCN. - Event Planning and Promotion
Plan and promote culturally relevant events and tournaments that reflect PBCN values and encourage community engagement and physical activity.
Qualifications
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum: Diploma in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Indigenous Studies, or a relate field.
- 3-5 years experience in recreation programming, preferably in Indigenous or northern communities.
- Understanding of Woodland Cree culture, land-based traditions, and community healing approaches.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and team-building skills.
- Ability to travel regularly to all eight PBCN communities.
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
The Recreation Program Manager is essential in translating the WM P's long-term vision of Mitho-Pimatisiwin - Living the Good Life into daily programs and experiences that strengthen community health, cultural pride, and generational connection.
