Emergency Public Safety Measures Now in Effect for Pelican Narrows
(Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, Treaty 6 Territory) — Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation leadership is confirming that the RCMP has advised there are no current public safety concerns in the PBCN community of Pelican Narrows.
However, precautionary measures are being implemented in the short-term. This follows an emergency meeting held Thursday evening, where Pelican Narrows council members passed a motion in response to escalating violence, firearm-related incidents and ongoing community safety concerns.
Effective immediately:
• Security checkpoints will be re-established, utilizing external security resources. More information will be provided about security operations prior to their implementation.
• The use of ATVs is prohibited until further notice, including quads, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, motorbikes and other off-road vehicles.
• Fireworks are prohibited until further notice.
• Private events and gatherings inside homes are prohibited in the immediate future, including wedding celebrations, graduation parties, birthday celebrations, social gatherings and special occasions.
• Local stores and fuel providers will be directed not to sell gasoline for use in ATVs and off-road vehicles.
All residents are expected to comply with these public safety directives. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action or referral to the appropriate authorities.
PBCN leadership continues to work with RCMP, community safety personnel and external partners to identify risks, prevent further violence and protect residents.
Community members are urged to remain alert, report suspicious activity and cooperate with security personnel and RCMP.
