Wildfire Update for Sandy Bay and Southend
While firefighters continue making steady progress on several active fires, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as hot, humid weather, strong winds and the potential for lightning are expected over the coming days. There is currently no immediate threat requiring evacuation of either community.
Southend Update
The Fleming Fire has now been classified as contained, marking an important milestone for firefighters after weeks of suppression efforts. Crews recently completed a walk of the fire perimeter and identified only a small number of remaining hot spots. Additional Type 3 crews are arriving to continue mop-up operations and ensure the fire remains secure.
Work also continues on the SEIR 01 Fire. Crews will be expanding operations along the eastern side of the fire while constructing additional access into the northern section. Although some active areas remain, firefighters continue making steady progress.
The Gulak Fire remains stable, with hot spots confined to the interior of the fire and none reported along the perimeter.
The McDonald Fire continues to be monitored. Ground crews and helicopter support will begin additional suppression work to strengthen containment efforts.
As a precaution, sprinklers have also been installed on cabins near White Sand to provide additional protection.
Sandy Bay Update
Firefighters continue making progress on the Border Fire. Crews successfully secured the northwest corner of the fire despite challenging conditions and are now planning the next phase of suppression operations.
Several new wildfire starts were reported over the weekend following lightning activity. Fire crews are actively monitoring these fires and conducting aerial scans to ensure no additional holdover fires develop near communities.
Residents may continue to experience periods of heavy smoke over the next several days. Most of the smoke affecting the area is originating from large wildfires burning outside the immediate region, including Ontario, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and the United States.
Smoke and Weather
Hot, humid weather, strong winds and an increased risk of thunderstorms are expected over the next several days. Lightning remains a concern, and wildfire officials will continue monitoring for new fire starts.
Smoke conditions are expected to worsen on July 21, with periods of low to moderate smoke affecting much of Saskatchewan. Residents who are sensitive to smoke, including Elders, young children, pregnant women and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions, are encouraged to remain indoors during periods of poor air quality, keep windows closed where possible and reduce strenuous outdoor activity.
Community Support
Additional air scrubbers are being delivered this week and will be available for distribution as needed. Priority will continue to be given to vulnerable households identified by local health services.
